Student Careers Advice and Support

Not sure what Career is right for you?

Feeling unsure about your future career is completely normal. Many students reach university with questions like “What job would suit me?”, “What if I choose the wrong path?” or “I don’t even know where to start” If this sounds familiar, you’re not alone and you don’t have to figure it out by yourself. Student Careers Advice and Support is available to you through our Careers and student opportunities team for the duration of your degree, and is available for three years after you graduate!

It’s OK Not to Have a Clear Career Plan

Pressure to have everything worked out can feel overwhelming, especially when friends or family seem confident about their next steps. But career decisions don’t need to be rushed. University is a time to explore, learn about yourself and gradually shape your future. Careers rarely follow a straight line, if you spoke to your lecturers, they likely to tell you about a wiggly career path to get to where they are now. Many graduates change direction, discover new interests or move into roles they hadn’t considered at the start of their studies.

Exploring Careers Before You Decide

You don’t need to choose a job title straight away. Instead, it can help to focus on exploration. This might include:

  • Attending careers workshops or employer events
  • Trying short work experience, volunteering or part‑time work
  • Taking skills or careers assessments
  • Talking to people working in roles that interest you

These experiences give you real insight into what work is actually like, helping you make more informed choices.

Developing Skills While You Decide

Even if you’re unsure about your future career, you can still build skills employers value. Teamwork, communication, problem‑solving and time management are useful in almost every role. Careers support can help you recognise and develop these skills through extracurricular activities such as the BCU Award, Part Time Work, and CV/ LinkedIn checks
